Technical Questions

Which photo formats are supported?

AD Photo Editor supports JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIF, and GIF formats for importing. Photos are stored in Active Directory in JPEG or PNG format, depending on the original format.

What's the recommended photo size?

For thumbnailPhoto, Microsoft recommends 96x96 pixels and less than 10KB. For jpegPhoto, larger sizes can be used, but staying under 100KB is recommended to minimize AD database size and replication traffic.

Which AD attributes are used to store photos?

AD Photo Editor can use either thumbnailPhoto (the standard attribute used by applications like Outlook) or jpegPhoto (an alternative attribute that can store larger images).

Can I use AD Photo Editor with Azure Active Directory?

No, AD Photo Editor works with on-premises Active Directory only. Azure AD uses different mechanisms for storing and managing user photos.

Does AD Photo Editor support forest trusts?

Yes, you can use AD Photo Editor to manage photos in trusted domains by specifying the domain name and appropriate credentials in the Connection Settings.

Operational Questions

How long does it take for photo changes to propagate?

Photo changes are written directly to Active Directory and then need to replicate to all domain controllers according to your replication schedule. This can take from minutes to hours depending on your AD infrastructure.

Will applications like Outlook automatically show the new photos?

Yes, applications that read user photos from AD (like Outlook) will display the new photos after they've retrieved them. This may require the application to refresh its cache or the user to restart the application.

Can I batch resize all photos to a standard size?

Yes, with the Pro Edition you can use the Import feature to standardize photos. Export all photos first, then use the Import feature with resize options to reimport them at a standard size.

How do I automate photo management?

AD Photo Editor doesn't currently include scheduling features, but you can script basic operations using other tools that modify AD attributes directly. For complex automation, consider using PowerShell scripts.
