AD Group Manager Web - Online Manual

Removing Members from a Group

From the group members view, you can remove one or more members from the group.

Removing individual members

  1. In the members grid, select the member(s) you want to remove by clicking their checkboxes.
  2. Click the Remove button.
  3. Confirm the removal when prompted.
  4. A confirmation shows how many members were removed successfully.

You can select multiple members at once using the checkboxes, then remove them all in one action.

Bulk remove

If your administrator has enabled the Bulk Remove feature, you can remove multiple members by entering their usernames separated by semicolons:

jsmith;jdoe;mwilson

The application matches each username against the current group members and removes all matches in a single operation.

What happens after removing members

  • The member is immediately removed from the group’s member list.
  • If audit logging is enabled, the removal is logged with who performed it, when, and which members were removed from which group.
  • If email notifications are configured, an instant notification is sent to the configured recipients.
  • The member loses whatever access the group was providing (file shares, application permissions, distribution list membership, etc.).

Important notes

  • Removing a member from a group does not delete or disable their AD account — it only removes them from that specific group.
  • If the member was added with a time-limited membership, you can still remove them manually before the TTL expires.
  • If you remove a member by mistake, you can add them back immediately using the Add Members function.
  • Primary group membership (for example, “Domain Users” as a user’s primary group) cannot be changed through AD Group Manager Web — this is managed in the user’s AD account properties.

Troubleshooting

“Failed to remove members” — the most common cause is insufficient AD permissions. If your administrator has enabled Enforce User Permission Checks, you need explicit Write Members permission on the group.

Member reappears after removal — this can happen if the member is in a nested group that is also a member of this group. Removing the user directly does not affect their nested group membership. Check if the user is a member of a subgroup.
